10 Early Signs of Pregnancy Before Your Missed Period
Why the earliest signs are so confusing
After ovulation, progesterone rises whether or not you conceive — bringing sore breasts, bloating, mood shifts, and fatigue either way. If an embryo implants (typically 6–10 days after ovulation), hCG enters the picture and adds its own effects on top. So early pregnancy and PMS share most of their cast. In this video I list all ten signs women report most — with the real distinguishing clues, such as spotting that's lighter and shorter than a period, and nausea arriving this early (unusual for PMS).
The 10 signs, in brief
- Implantation spotting — light pink/brown spotting for a few hours to 2 days, about a week after ovulation.
- Mild cramping — lower and duller than period cramps, from implantation and early uterine changes.
- Breast tenderness or tingling — often stronger than your usual PMS pattern, with darkening areolas later.
- Profound fatigue — the kind that naps don't fix.
- Heightened smell and food aversions — coffee or cooking smells suddenly unbearable.
- Frequent urination — increased blood flow to the kidneys starts early.
- Nausea — possible before a missed period, though more typical from week 6.
- Metallic taste and extra saliva — lesser-known but commonly reported.
- Basal body temperature staying high — if you chart, 18+ high days is a strong hint.
- A 'different' feeling + missed period — the missed period itself is still the most reliable sign of all.
When to test
Modern tests can sometimes detect hCG a few days before your period is due — but testing early risks a false negative simply because levels haven't risen enough yet. The most dependable result comes on or after the day your period is due, with first-morning urine. A faint line is still a line. If the test is negative and your period doesn't come, test again in 2–3 days.
Common questions
Can I have signs one week after conception?
Implantation usually happens 6–10 days after ovulation, and symptoms follow implantation — so signs much earlier than that are almost certainly progesterone doing its normal post-ovulation work.
Is implantation bleeding always present?
No — only about a quarter to a third of women notice it. Its absence means nothing at all.
My test is negative but I feel pregnant. What now?
Wait 2–3 days and retest with first-morning urine. If your period is a week late with continued negatives, see your clinician — other causes of a late period deserve a look too.
